![]() Chargers Win Their First Title 14-13 Over The Giants After a weather delay and field location changes, the Chargers finally took on the Northwest Giants at Germantown High School in front of a packed house for the 2002 Del-Val Championship Game. The Giants struck first when (QB) Mark Jarmon hit (WR) Rogers on a 27 yard TD pass. The extra point was good giving them a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. This was a result of an interception from (QB) McCray on his first drive. The Chargers continued to look nervous when (TB) Carey King fumbled on the next possession giving the Giants the ball on the Chargers 30 yard line. The Giants were driving for another score when (FS) Jamar Griffin picked off a pass in the end zone to give the Chargers the ball back. The Chargers were unable to move the ball in 2nd quarter and unfortunately kept their defense on the field. Because of this the Giants continued to make big plays down the field scoring on a 23 yard post corner pass to (WR) Troy Ham to take 13-0 lead later in the first half. The extra point, however, was blocked by (DT) Smoke Dog.Defensive Captain Jose Montanez gave an emotional speech at halftime to rally the troops. After only getting two first downs in the first half, the Chargers were sparked by (QB) McCray hitting (TE) Couch on a 59 yard catch and run to the Giants 10 yard line setting up a 6 yard TD pass to (WR) Shawn Foxworth. The extra point was good making the score 13-7 with 5:45 left in the 3rd quarter. The Chargers defense held the Giants to two first downs on the drive before the Chargers special teams made another big play when (S) Wade Fauntleroy blocked a punt and (DB) Roland Whitting recovered the ball running 62 yards for the tying touchdown. The extra point was good giving the Chargers a 14-13 lead with 1:01 left in the 3rd quarter. The Chargers were trying to control the clock with the running game moving the ball twice into the giants terrority, but still came away with no points. The Chargers defense kept the pressure on the Giants offense, forcing them into bad throws and sacks for losses and not allowing them to cross the 50 yard line in the 4th quarter. However, the Chargers approach to run the clock out using the running game was halted when they could not gain a first down. The Giants started their last drive from their own 18 yard line. With the Chargers defense keeping the pressure on the Giants, breaking up two passes, sacking the QB once and forcing him to throw short on fourth down turning the ball back over on downs, the Chargers were able to kneel down to end the game. (DB) Roland Whitting was named MVP after rushing for 33 yards on 5 carries, breaking up 3 passes and recovering a blocked punt resulting in a 64 yard touchdown. |
