Steelers Scraped

For the third straight week, the Overbrook Chargers have kept inferior teams around until the last minute. This time the Chargers needed overtime to dispatch the hated Conshohocken Steelers 9-3.

And for the second straight week the Chargers offensive unit looked down right offensive. As they marched their opening drive down to the Steelers 1-yard line, the Chargers were stopped on 4 and goal. The Steelers, who had not allowed an opponent to score all season, dodged bullets throughout the drive, as the Chargers squandered several scoring opportunities.

QB PJ McCray missed several wide - open receivers and has looked very shaky his last two starts. Not to discredit the Steelers defense who bent several times but did not break. After that initial opening drive, the Chargers offense failed to connect on several plays that could have busted this game wide open and their only points came on a Greg Cox 32 yard field goal in the second quarter.

Over thrown passes and dropped balls marred the offense the entire game and the run game added little support. One bright spot though, after missing the last two games for unknown reasons, franchise RB Paul Northern made his return to the line up. Northern look impressive gaining 45 yards on the opening drive, but fatigue soon set in and the spring in his step was lost throughout the rest of the game. This game turned in to a defensive struggle as the Chargers defensive unit completely shut down the Steelers offense. The entire unit may have played their best game of the season, limiting the vaunted Steelers to less than 80-yards total offense while intercepting 2 passes and holding the Steelers QB to 0 completions.

The Steelers only points came after a botched Charger punt attempt. After fielding a low snap, P Greg Cox tried to avoid the rush and foolishly threw the ball into the field of play. The pass intercepted by a Steelers lineman, was returned to the Chargers 9-yard line. The defensive unit however held the Steelers to 2 yards on three plays and forced the field goal tying the game at 3.

Late in the 4th quarter the Chargers had another opportunity to put the game away, but were denied again as the Steelers held on 4th and goal inside their own 5-yard line. Many on the sideline questioned HC Terry Henderson's decision to go for it on 4th down, but in was the right decision. That shows confidence in you offense and in a game like that and against this team, you have to go for the jugular.

The win puts the Chargers in sole possession of 2nd place with a 4-1 record, trailing the 4-0 Northwest Giants, who defeated the Frankford Mustangs 6-0 at Frankford. The Charger's who have a bye this week, play again at home on 10/25/03 at 8:00pm against the Tabor Rams.
