Chargers Defeat NW Giants in a Thriller 13-12!

The Chargers opened up their season with a hard hitting game with their arch rival NW Giants who were coming off three straight victories over the Chargers, and were looking to dismantle the Chargers offense with blitzing and keeping pressure on the QB. In the first quarter, both teams were unable to consistently keep drives alive. In the 2nd quarter, the Chargers drove 73 yards in 6 plays ending in a 37 yard TD pass to (TE) Ed Giddings from (QB) Demarteleire. The point after was no good. After a Chargers turnover, the Giants had the ball on the Chargers 22 yard line and finished the drive with a 4 yard run by Giants (TB) Greg Garrett. The Chargers defense was forced to stay on the field in the 2nd quarter for 13 minutes due to offensive and special teams turnovers. The game was tied 6 - 6 when Giants (TB) Greg Garrett scored his second touchdown in the first half, giving the Giants a 12 - 6 lead going into half time. The Chargers came out in the second half and were able to put a drive together down to the Giants 3 yard line before throwing an interception in the end zone to kill the drive. The Chargers defense kept the pressure on Giants (QB) Mark Jarmon, hitting him on every play and forcing him into bad throws. (DE) David Carter continued to harass the Giants QB on every play. The defensive lineman stayed in their lanes giving the QB no room to make plays.

With 3:06 left in the game, the Chargers had the ball on their own 12 yard line when (QB) Demarteleire completed 5 passes on the drive to 4 different receivers. The key play to the drive was when (TE) Ed Giddings caught a pass in traffic and was hit by 3 defenders on the Giants 7 yard line. Two plays later, (QB) Demarteleire hit (WR) Troy Ham in the left corner for a touchdown and to tie the game at 12. (K) Gonzales, who missed his first extra point, made this extra point to give the Chargers a one point lead 13-12 with 1:09 left in the game. The Chargers defense kept the Giants in check and came out with a hard fought victory!
