Chargers Put Blaze Flame Out 34 - 12!

The Chargers, coming off a bye week and missing 8 starters on offense & defense, were able to put the Blaze flame out in a 34-12 victory on Saturday night.

The Chargers started the scoring with a 7 play 54 yard drive that ended with a 15 yard TD pass to (TE) Ed Giddings from (QB) McCray. The extra point was good. The Chargers second drive went 11 plays ending in the second quarter with a 1 yard TD run by (FB) Salaam Thompson. The extra point was no good, which gave the Chargers a 13 - 0 lead early in the second quarter. The Chargers tried to do an onside kick after the score, but the kickoff team showed their hand and the Blaze recoverd the ball on their own 47 yard line. After 2 personal foul penalties by the defense to keep the drive alive, the Blaze were able to put the ball in the end zone to close the gap to 13 - 6 at half time.

The third quarter started with the Chargers defense setting the tone by sacking the Blaze (QB) on two straight plays, putting the Blaze in a 3rd and 31. (MLB) Donnie Smith picked off the pass and pitched it to (LB) Terry Boyd who raced 60 yards for a TD, however the play was called back on a questionable call. No flags were thrown, but after a discussion with the officials, the ball came back to the Chargers 48 yard line. The Chargers put a 8 play drive together all on the ground with 2 big plays from (TB) Roland Whitting, who rushed for 32 yards on two plays setting up (TB) Paul Northern for a 1 yard TD run giving the Chargers a 19 - 6 lead early in the third quarter. The Chargers defense kept the pressure on the Blaze offense not giving up a first down on the ground and their offense under 100 yards total. (TB) Whitting sparked the defense with a interception and returned it 53 yards to set up a 54 yard touchdown pass to (WR) Troy Hamm 54 from (QB) McCray to take a 27 - 6 lead into the fourth quarter. The Blaze still had some fight left, making 2 first downs on fourth down to keep drives alive and scoring a TD with 3:40 left in the game, making the score 27 - 12. The Chargers responded with a two play scoring drive to (WR) Troy Hamm's second TD for 72 yards getting great blocks down the field from (TE) Ed Giddings and (WR) Shawn Foxworth for the final touchdown.
